Government in November decided to bring online seller within limit of Rs. 20 lakhs.
So, legally you are not required to get GST registration.
But, online portals such as Amazon, Flipkart requires sellers to have GST number otherwise they have to charge GST on sells on your behalf.
To conclude you need to have GST registration to sell online on e-commerce portals. If you are selling through you own website, then you can sell without GST registration.
